Chin Up

He said “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
He said,“hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”

Black waters, jump in with your eyes closed
Trusting every corner, surrounding every deep end
I couldn’t see his face and I never knew his name
But the tendons in his hands worked twice against my faith

Our bodies moved like two to tango
He was one step ahead with his hands around my throat
The air in my lungs began to seep like a dream
And I screamed with no sound as I started to bleed

He said “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
He said “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
And then he took my life out
Took my pride out
Took my gift to love out of me

The dark began to close in, the air became cold
And as I rebuilt my clothes I started to fold
Under the great big sky, those merciless clouds
I let the water wash over what will never be found

I couldn’t let the tears go, he wouldn’t let them come
I couldn’t let my fears go, he had them undone
I couldn’t say a thing as he rose to his feet
All I smelt in the air, was the stench of defeat

He said “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
He said “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
And then he took my life out
Took my pride out
Took my gift to love out of me

Oh, the sunflower seed of the worth that I feel
Can’t compare to the suffering you enjoyed in detail
Of my pure, pure, pure, pure, gold

He said, “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”
He said, “hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see this again”

Oh, hold your chin up high, kid, you’re never gonna see him again
He took my life out
Took my pride out
Took my gift to love out of me
